A simple home

summer-fall-07-127.jpgI love this quote by English poet William Morris- “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” As much as you can, fill your home with the things that you love and that make you smile; things that bring you joy. Of course, as an anonymous author said, “When love adorns a home, other ornaments are secondary.” If we build our homes so that anyone who enters feels special and cared for, we have taken great steps toward making a cozy and inviting home for those we love and also those that will cross our paths. Use those beautiful things that you have-don’t let them gather dust and be for display only if at all possible. Fill your home with things that inspire you. Fill your home with good things–things that bring honor to the Lord. “By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; and by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.” Proverbs 24:3-4 (NASB)

These are some of the “pleasant riches” that I want the rooms of my home to be filled with:

  • Music
  • Flowers from my own yard
  • Quilts that I have made myself or that have been lovingly crafted by others
  • Things that inspire us and remind us of God’s purposes in our lives
  • Scrapbooks of treasured memories
  • Candlelight and sweet smells
  • Simplicity and loveliness
  • Treasured heirlooms
  • Good books
  • The sweet presence of my loved ones
